How Much Lorem Ipsum Do You Need for a Mockup?
Size placeholder text to the real copy: a headline is 5 to 10 words, a card blurb 20 to 40, a blog body 300+. A quick guide with word counts.
The short answer: match the real copy
Use as much lorem ipsum as the finished page will realistically hold, no more and no less. A product headline is usually 5 to 10 words, a card description 20 to 40, a hero subtitle one or two sentences, and a blog post body several hundred words. Filler that is much shorter than the final copy hides overflow and wrapping bugs. Filler that is much longer makes a clean layout look broken. So before generating anything, decide what slot you are filling, then pick the unit that fits it: words for headlines and buttons, sentences for blurbs, paragraphs for article bodies. The sections below give you working sizes for each.
What one paragraph, sentence and word really is
In the PixelTools generator, a sentence is 6 to 14 words (about 10 on average), and a paragraph is 4 to 7 sentences, so roughly 55 words on average and anywhere from 24 to 98. One test paragraph came out at 69 words. That matters because the count box is not a word budget. If you ask for 3 paragraphs, expect around 165 words, not an exact figure. When you need an exact length, such as a 40-word card blurb or a 300-word body, switch the unit to words. Words mode returns exactly the number you request, which makes it the right choice for anything with a hard character or word limit.
Starting sizes for common UI slots
These are starting points to adjust against your own content, not standards. Buttons and nav labels: 1 to 3 words. Headlines: 5 to 10 words. Subheadings and hero subtitles: 1 to 2 sentences. Card or listing descriptions: 20 to 40 words. Testimonials and quotes: 1 to 3 sentences. Form helper text: 1 sentence. Article intro: 1 paragraph. Full article body: 5 to 10 paragraphs, or 300 to 600 words in words mode. Generate each slot separately instead of one big block, so the lengths vary the way real content does. Then test the extremes: your shortest and longest plausible version of each, not just the average.
Use filler to break your layout on purpose
Placeholder text is a stress test, not decoration. Generate a very short and a very long version of each slot and see what the layout does. Does a three-line title push the button off the card? Does a one-word title leave an awkward gap? Lorem ipsum helps here because its words are mixed lengths, so line breaks land unevenly like real prose. The generator also draws from a fixed vocabulary of about 109 distinct words, so long text repeats words often. That is fine for spacing and line breaks, but it means filler cannot tell you how real copy will read. For tone, hyphenation, or non-Latin scripts, test with real text in the actual language.
When to turn off the classic opening line
Leave the "Start with Lorem ipsum" toggle on when you want the familiar first line, and turn it off when several blocks sit near each other. With it on, the first output begins with "Lorem ipsum dolor sit amet, consectetur adipiscing elit". In words mode the opener is cut to the count you ask for, so 3 words gives "Lorem ipsum dolor." If a mockup has six cards and each one begins with the identical phrase, reviewers notice the repetition and it looks copy-pasted. Generate each block with the toggle off, or generate once with it on for the lead paragraph and again with it off for the rest. Each Generate click builds new random text, so repeated runs won't match.
Limits, copying and downloading
The generator accepts 1 to 1,000 of any unit, and the default is 3. A value outside that range is corrected to the nearest limit, and the field shows a hint when that happens. Paragraphs are separated by a blank line, so they paste cleanly into design tools and code editors. The result can be copied to the clipboard or saved as lorem-ipsum.txt, which is handy for handing a batch to a developer or loading it into a test fixture. Generation happens in your browser, so nothing is uploaded. For a big dataset, say 500 short sentences for a list view, use sentences mode with a high count and split the output by line or space.
