AI upscaling that actually recovers detail

ESRGAN AI model — state of the art

The same model family used by professional desktop tools like Upscayl, running entirely in your browser. No server, no account, no upload.

Before / after comparison slider

Drag the handle left and right to compare the original and upscaled versions side by side at full resolution. See exactly what the AI recovered.

2× and 4× scale options

2× is fast and ideal for web use. 4× is best for print, large-format display, or images that started very small. Choose what fits your use case.

Batch upscaling with ZIP download

Upload multiple images and upscale them all in one click. Download each result individually or grab the entire batch as a ZIP archive.

One-time model download, then instant

The AI model downloads to your browser on first use and is cached automatically. Every subsequent session starts in seconds with no re-download.

100% private — runs in your browser

Powered by TensorFlow.js and WebAssembly, the AI runs directly on your CPU. Nothing is uploaded to any server at any point.

Three steps to a sharper image

  1. 1

    Upload your image

Drag and drop one or more images onto the page, click to browse, or paste from your clipboard. Supports JPG, PNG, WebP, and HEIC. All processing stays in your browser — nothing is sent to a server.

  2. 2

    Choose your scale factor

Select 2× for a fast result or 4× for maximum resolution. On first use, the AI model downloads once to your browser — subsequent runs are instant. A live progress bar tracks each image as it's processed tile by tile.

  3. 3

    Download your upscaled images

When processing is complete, use the before/after slider to compare the original and upscaled versions side by side. Download individually or grab all files as a ZIP archive.

Built for anyone who needs more resolution

Whether you're a photographer preparing a print, a designer scaling up a client asset, or a creator repurposing an old screenshot — PixelTools upscales your images with AI sharpness, for free, without uploading them anywhere.

Photographers

Recover detail in older low-resolution scans, upscale crops, or prepare images for large-format print without the quality loss of traditional interpolation.

Content creators

Turn small thumbnails and screen captures into high-resolution assets for video, social media, or digital advertising without visible pixelation.

Print & design

Convert web-sized images to print-ready resolution. A 72 DPI image for screen becomes a sharp 300 DPI asset for posters, banners, or packaging at 4×.

Retro gaming & archives

Upscale pixel art, old game screenshots, or archived photos to high-DPI displays while preserving or enhancing the original detail.

Frequently asked questions

Is this AI upscaler really free?

+

Yes, completely free with no limits. Upscale as many images as you want — no account, no credits, no subscription required.

Are my images uploaded to a server?

+

No. The AI model (ESRGAN) runs entirely in your browser using WebAssembly and TensorFlow.js. Your images never leave your device.

What is the difference between 2× and 4× upscaling?

+

2× doubles the resolution (e.g., 1000×1000 → 2000×2000) and is the fastest option — typically 5–10 seconds per image. 4× quadruples the resolution (e.g., 1000×1000 → 4000×4000) and takes longer but produces significantly more detail, ideal for printing or large-format display.

What AI model does this use?

+

PixelTools uses ESRGAN (Enhanced Super-Resolution Generative Adversarial Network), the same model family used by professional tools like Upscayl. ESRGAN is trained to recover realistic textures and sharp edges, not just blur-and-enlarge.

How long does upscaling take?

+

Processing time depends on image size and your device. A typical 1000×1000 photo takes around 5–15 seconds at 2× on a modern laptop. Very large images (above 3000px on either side) can take significantly longer. The first run also includes a one-time model download (~5–35 MB depending on the scale selected).

What formats are supported?

+

Input: JPG, PNG, WebP, and HEIC. Output format matches the input — JPG in, JPG out; PNG in, PNG out — preserving your original format and transparency where applicable.

Can I upscale multiple images at once?

+

Yes. Upload as many images as you need. They are processed one at a time to avoid memory issues, with a progress bar for each file. When done, download all as a ZIP.

Is AI upscaling better than just resizing in Photoshop?

+

Yes, for low-resolution images. Traditional resizing (bicubic interpolation) blurs edges and invents no new detail. ESRGAN is trained on millions of images and learns to reconstruct realistic textures, hair, text, and edges — producing a noticeably sharper result.
