Why use PixelTools' yaml formatter

Five languages in one tool

JSON, JavaScript, HTML, CSS, and YAML, switchable in one click without losing what you pasted.

Beautify or minify

Readable output with your choice of 2 spaces, 4 spaces, or tabs, or the smallest possible size.

Instant, live output

The result updates as you type or paste. No button to click and no page reload.

Clear error messages

Invalid JSON, YAML, or JavaScript shows what went wrong and where, instead of failing silently.

Copy or download

Copy the result to your clipboard or save it as a .json, .js, .html, .css, or .yaml file.

100% private

Your code never leaves your browser. Nothing is uploaded, logged, or stored.

Three steps to use the yaml formatter

  1. 1

    Paste your YAML

Paste the code into the input box. The language is already set to YAML.

  2. 2

    Choose how to beautify it

Beautify is selected. Pick spaces or a tab for the indent size.

  3. 3

    Copy or download the result

The output updates as you type. Copy it with one click, or download it as a file.

When a YAML formatter helps

YAML breaks on a single misplaced space. Formatting it both validates the file and puts every level back on a consistent indent.

Reading minified production code

Re-indent a minified JavaScript or CSS file so you can follow what it does while debugging.

Shrinking API payloads and config

Minify JSON before embedding it in a request, a fixture, or a environment variable.

Cleaning up pasted snippets

Make code from a forum, email, or chat match a consistent indent before it goes into your project.

Checking a config file

Paste YAML or JSON to confirm it is valid and see its structure laid out properly.

Frequently asked questions

Does the YAML formatter also validate my file?

+

Yes. The file is parsed before it is formatted, so invalid YAML shows an error with the line and column instead of producing output.

Are comments kept when I format YAML?

+

No. Comments are dropped, because the formatter reads the data and writes it back out fresh. For the same reason, anchors are renamed (&ref_0), merge keys (<<) are written as plain quoted keys, and numbers beyond 15 or so digits can lose precision. Check files that rely on any of these, such as Docker Compose or CI configs, before replacing the original.

Why is there no Minify option for YAML?

+

In YAML, indentation is part of the syntax, so removing whitespace would change or break the file. Use the JSON minifier if you need a compact form of the same data.

Is my code uploaded anywhere?

+

No. Beautifying and minifying both run entirely in your browser with JavaScript. Nothing you paste is sent to a server, logged, or stored, so it is safe to use on private or unreleased code.
