Frequently asked questions

Why does my webcam video have backwards text, and does flipping fix it?

Front-facing cameras and most webcam apps show you a mirrored image so moving left feels natural, and many of them record that mirrored image too. Anything with writing in it — a whiteboard, a book cover, a logo on a hoodie — comes out reversed. A horizontal flip is exactly the inverse of that mirroring, so it puts the writing back the right way round.

Which direction should I choose?

Horizontal for almost everything: it is the un-mirror for selfie footage and the way to make a subject face the other side of the frame. Vertical is much rarer — it inverts the picture top to bottom, which is not the same as rotating a sideways clip 180°, and is mainly used for reflection effects or footage from an inverted camera rig.

Does flipping a video lose quality?

Mirroring rewrites the position of every pixel, so unlike trimming or muting there is no way to copy the video stream through untouched — it has to be re-encoded. PixelTools encodes with H.264 at CRF 23, a visually lossless setting, so a single flip is not something you will see. Flipping the same file over and over will slowly soften it, as any repeated re-encode would.

What happens to the sound?

Nothing at all. The audio stream is copied across byte for byte rather than re-encoded, so it stays exactly as loud and as clean as the original and adds almost no processing time. The one exception is a source whose audio codec an MP4 cannot hold — Opus or Vorbis inside a WebM, typically — where the audio is converted to 192 kbps AAC so the result still plays everywhere.

Is flipping the same as rotating?

No, and they are not interchangeable. Rotating turns the frame around its centre, so a 90° rotation swaps width and height. Flipping mirrors the frame across an axis and leaves the dimensions alone — a 1920×1080 clip stays 1920×1080. Text survives a rotation and reads backwards after a flip, which is the quickest way to tell which one you actually need.

How long does a flip take?

It scales with resolution and length, since every frame is re-encoded on your own machine. A one-minute 1080p clip typically finishes in well under a minute on a modern laptop; a long 4K file takes proportionally longer. The progress bar tracks ffmpeg's real frame position, so the number it shows is the actual state of the encode, not an animation.

Do my videos get uploaded to PixelTools?

They do not. The mirror runs through ffmpeg.wasm inside your own browser tab, so the file never crosses the network — which also means there is no file-size ceiling imposed by an upload, no waiting on a server queue, and nothing of yours sitting in someone else's storage afterwards.

Can I flip a video on my phone?

Yes — the page works in mobile Safari and Chrome without installing anything. Bear in mind that a phone has less memory and a slower CPU than a laptop, so a very long 4K clip is better handled on a desktop; short vertical clips shot for social feeds flip comfortably on the phone itself.
