Frequently asked questions
How does leet speak (1337) work?
+
Leet replaces letters with numbers or symbols that look similar. Basic leet uses a few swaps: A becomes 4, E becomes 3, I becomes 1, O becomes 0, S becomes 5 and T becomes 7, so "elite" becomes 3l173. Advanced leet also covers consonants, for example H as |-|, M as |\/| and W as \/\/.
Can leetspeak be decoded back to normal text?
+
Mostly, but not perfectly. Decoding reads the symbols back to letters in lowercase, and the number 1 always becomes i even though some people use it for l. Because glyphs like |_ and |_| overlap, the decoder picks the reading that fits the whole word best. Plain numbers such as 2024, 3.14, 10:30 or $5 are left alone.
Are there standard leet rules?
+
No. Leet is informal, so tables differ between communities and each person improvises. This tool uses a common published table and applies it the same way every time. Your friends or game may use different substitutions, and capital letters are not preserved in the advanced style.
