What the ogham translator does

Both directions

Write Ogham from Latin text, or paste Ogham and get a Latin reading back.

Standard feda table

Uses the classic twenty letters plus peith, in the Unicode Ogham block U+1681 to U+169A.

Reads the forfeda too

When decoding, the five diphthong signs ᚕ ᚖ ᚗ ᚘ ᚙ come back as ea, oi, ui, ia and ae.

Plain, paste-friendly output

Output uses plain spaces with no feather marks, so it pastes cleanly into any app.

Frequently asked questions

Is this an Irish to Ogham translation?

+

No. It converts letters, not meaning. Each Latin letter is replaced by the Ogham letter (feda) for the same sound, so "Brigid" becomes ᚁᚏᚔᚌᚔᚇ. Real Ogham inscriptions were written in Primitive and Old Irish, so an English name in Ogham is a modern transliteration rather than something an ancient carver would have written.

Which letters does Ogham not have, and what replaces them?

+

Classical Ogham has 20 letters in four groups of five, plus five later forfeda. It has no k, v, w, x, y or j. This tool uses the common conventions: k becomes c (ᚉ), v becomes f (ᚃ), w becomes u (ᚒ), y and j become i (ᚔ), and x becomes cs (ᚉᚄ). The letter p uses ᚚ (peith), added later, and ng uses the single letter ᚍ (ngeadal). Several letters share a symbol, so decoding is an approximation.

What are the feather marks and the Ogham space mark?

+

Ogham is written along a stem line, usually read from bottom to top on stone. Printed Ogham often puts a feather mark (᚛) at the start and a reversed feather mark (᚜) at the end. The Ogham space mark (U+1680) draws the stem line across the gap between words. This tool leaves out both and keeps plain spaces, because they paste more reliably. You can add them by hand if you want a formal look.
