Everything you need to extract text from a PDF

Paragraph structure preserved

Line breaks and paragraph spacing are reconstructed from each line's position on the page, not guessed — so the output reads like the original, not one run-together block of words.

Whole document or a page range

Extract every page by default, or switch to a from/to page range to pull text from just the section you need.

100% private — nothing uploaded

PDF.js reads your document entirely in your browser. Your file never touches a server, which matters for contracts, transcripts, or anything sensitive.

Honest handling of scanned PDFs

If a PDF has no real text layer — a scanned document, for example — you get a clear message instead of a silently empty download.

Download .txt or copy to clipboard

Grab a plain-text file that opens anywhere, or copy the extracted text straight to your clipboard to paste into another app.

Instant browser-based processing

No queue, no server round-trip. Extraction runs as fast as your device allows — typically a few seconds for most documents.

Three steps to extract your PDF's text

  1. 1

    Upload your PDF

Drag and drop a PDF file onto the page or click to browse. Reports, articles, contracts, and academic papers all work — any PDF with a real text layer.

  2. 2

Choose whole document or a page range

By default, every page is extracted. Switch to page range mode to pull text from just the pages you need — handy for a single chapter or section of a longer document.

  3. 3

    Download or copy your text

Click Extract and the text is pulled out locally in your browser, with paragraph breaks preserved. Download it as a .txt file or copy it straight to your clipboard.

Built for anyone who needs text out of a PDF

Whether you're quoting a report, feeding a contract into another tool, or pulling the body text of a research paper — PixelTools extracts your PDF's text in seconds, free, with no upload.

Pull quotes from articles and reports

Extract the text of a PDF article or report to quote, summarize, or repurpose elsewhere without retyping it by hand.

Feed documents into other tools

Get plain text out of a contract, invoice, or brief so you can paste it into a search, spreadsheet, or AI tool that doesn't read PDFs directly.

Extract text from research papers

Pull the body text of an academic paper into a plain-text file for note-taking, citation tools, or plagiarism checks.

Make PDF content searchable

Turn a PDF into plain text you can search, grep, or index — useful for archives of reports or documents your usual search tool can't look inside.

Frequently asked questions

Is this PDF to text tool free?

+

Yes — completely free, no account required, no watermarks, no limit on how many PDFs you extract text from.

Does my PDF get uploaded to a server?

+

No. Extraction runs entirely in your browser using PDF.js. Your file is never sent anywhere — it stays on your device the whole time, which matters for contracts, medical records, or anything else you'd rather not upload.

Will the extracted text keep its paragraph structure?

+

Yes. Rather than gluing every word in the PDF into one giant run-on block, the extractor tracks each line's position on the page and reinserts line breaks and paragraph spacing based on it — so the output reads like the original document, not a wall of text.

Why does it say "no extractable text found"?

+

That means the PDF is scanned or image-only — the pages are actually pictures of text, with no underlying text layer for a computer to read. This tool can only pull text that already exists inside the PDF; for scanned documents, you need an OCR (optical character recognition) tool that recognizes text in an image first.

Can I extract text from just some pages?

+

Yes. Switch to page range mode and set a from/to page — only that range is extracted, which is faster for pulling one section out of a long document.

What format is the output?

+

A plain .txt file, or copy the text directly to your clipboard with the Copy button. Plain text opens anywhere — a text editor, word processor, or note-taking app — with no PDF viewer needed.

Does it work on password-protected PDFs?

+

Not currently. Remove the password in your PDF reader first, then upload the unlocked file here.

Is there a file size or page count limit?

+

No hard limit beyond what your browser and device can handle. Very large PDFs (hundreds of pages) take longer since every page is processed locally on your machine rather than on a server.
