Merged PDF Has Upside-Down Pages? Fix It

Some pages of your merged PDF are upside down or sideways? Why merging keeps each page's rotation, how we tested it, and how to fix it in a click.

The short answer: the page was already flagged as rotated

A page that looks upside down after merging was almost always flagged as rotated in its source file, and the merge simply kept that flag. Every PDF page can carry a rotation value of 0, 90, 180 or 270 degrees. Scanners, phone apps and some export tools write that value instead of turning the image itself. Some viewers show the original file the way you expect, so the problem only appears once the page sits in a combined document next to others. The merge did not rotate anything. It copied each page as it was. That is good news, because it means the fix is one rotation, not a re-scan and not a re-merge from scratch. Find the affected pages in the merged file, rotate only those, and download the result.

What we tested: merging keeps rotation, even inherited rotation

We checked this against the same PDF library our merge tool uses. We built a one-page PDF with a 180 degree rotation set on the page itself, and a second one where the rotation was set once on the parent page tree, which the PDF format allows and some generators use. Both were copied into a new document the way the merge does it. After saving and reloading, both pages still read 180 degrees. So our merge neither drops a rotation nor adds one. If a page comes out upside down, open the original file on its own in a second viewer. If it is upside down there too, the flag was always in the source, and only the viewer you used first was hiding it.

Fix it after merging: rotate only the bad pages

Open the merged file in Rotate PDF, click the thumbnail of each wrong page, and download. Each click turns that page 90 degrees clockwise, so an upside-down page needs two clicks and a page lying on its side needs one or three. Pages you do not click keep their orientation. The tool adds your turn to the page's existing rotation and wraps it back into the 0 to 270 range, so a page already flagged at 180 that you turn another 180 ends up at 0, which is upright and clean. Everything runs in your browser tab, so the file is not uploaded. Check the result by scrolling the whole document once before you send it, since a page that looked fine in the thumbnail grid can still be off in the full view.

Fix it before merging when many files are wrong

If one source file is wrong on every page, rotate that file first, then merge. It is faster than rotating forty pages one by one in the combined document. Use Rotate PDF with its rotate-all option on the single file, save it, and add the fixed copy to Merge PDF in the right position. This also keeps the problem from coming back if you re-merge later with a different order. Scans are the usual cause: a batch of pages fed into a sheet scanner sideways comes out as a whole file flagged at 90 degrees. Check the first page of each source file before you merge a stack. It takes seconds, and it saves a rotation pass over a long combined document.

Photos and landscape pages behave differently

Not every sideways page is a rotation flag. A photo turned into a PDF page can be sideways because the image itself is stored sideways, and rotating the page is still the right fix. A landscape page inside a portrait document is a different thing: it has a wider-than-tall shape on purpose, and rotating it makes the text sit on its side. If a page looks correct but is a different size or shape from its neighbours, that is a size question, not a rotation one, and we cover it in the article on merged PDFs with different page sizes. Rotate a page only when its content reads sideways or upside down. When in doubt, turn it once and look.

Stop it happening on the next merge

Check orientation in the source files, not in the merged result. Open each file in a viewer that shows page thumbnails, scan the first page of each, and fix any wrong file before it goes into Merge PDF. Put the files in the order you want before merging, because reordering later is a separate step and the Rearrange PDF Pages tool keeps each page's rotation as it moves the page. For scanned stacks, rescan the pile the right way up if you can. If you cannot, one rotate-all on the file is enough. Merge last, once every source reads upright, and the combined file will match.
