What the touch test checks

60-square grid

Six columns by ten rows covers the grid area, so you can check each region of it.

Multi-touch counter

Shows fingers down now and the most fingers seen at once.

Made for touch

Works with taps and drags and does not scroll or zoom the page while you test.

Private, nothing uploaded

The test runs in your browser tab. No file, key press, click or sound leaves your device.

Test your touch screen in three steps

  1. 1

    Clean the screen

Wipe the screen and wash your hands. Grease and moisture cause false results.

  2. 2

    Drag across the grid

Touch and slide across the squares. Each one that registers turns green.

  3. 3

Check what stays grey, then try more fingers

A square that never turns green is a spot the screen did not register. Then put down two, three or more fingers to see the multi-touch count.

When a touch screen test helps

Touch faults are patchy and intermittent, so a systematic sweep finds what random tapping misses.

After a screen replacement

Check that the new digitiser works in every corner.

Buying a used phone or tablet

Sweep the grid before you hand over money.

Testing a new screen protector

See whether it has made any part of the screen less responsive.

Frequently asked questions

How do I find a dead zone on my touch screen?

+

Drag your finger across the whole grid, row by row. Any square that stays grey after you have touched it is a place the screen did not register. Repeat in that spot to rule out a slip.

How many touches should my screen register?

+

Most phones and tablets report at least five simultaneous touches, and many report ten. Laptops and monitors vary, and some only support two. The test shows the highest number your device reported.

What is a ghost touch?

+

A ghost touch is a touch the screen invents without your finger, usually from a damaged panel, a bad screen protector, moisture or charger noise. If the fingers-down counter changes while you touch nothing, you have one.

Why do edges and corners fail more often?

+

Cases, screen protectors and a worn digitiser can all reduce sensitivity at the edges. If only the corners fail, remove the case and protector and test again.

Can I use it with a mouse?

+

Yes. A mouse drag lights the squares too, which lets you try the page on a desktop, but it only reports one pointer at a time.

Does it work on phones, tablets and touch laptops?

+

It works in any browser that sends touch input, including Chrome, Safari and Firefox on phones, tablets and touch-screen laptops.
