Everything you need to listen to a PDF
Natural neural voices
28 American and British English voices from a modern speech model, not the flat built-in system voice.
100% private
Both the PDF text extraction and the voice run in your browser. Nothing is uploaded, nothing is stored.
Start at any page
Skip the cover and contents. Pick the page to start from and continue from where the last run stopped.
Wrapped lines handled
Line breaks from PDF layout and hyphenated words are cleaned up so sentences are spoken as sentences, not chopped at every line end.
Download the audio
Save the reading as a WAV file to listen on your phone, or convert it to MP3 with the next-step suggestions.
No account, no limits on runs
Read as many PDFs as you like. The voice model downloads once and then works from your browser cache.
Three steps to hear your PDF
- 1
Upload your PDF
Drag and drop a PDF or click to browse. Reports, papers, articles and ebooks work, as long as the PDF has selectable text.
- 2
Pick where to start, a voice and a speed
Choose the page to start at, one of 28 American or British English voices, and a speed from 0.5x to 2x.
- 3
Listen or download
Click Read aloud. Play the audio in the page or download it as a WAV file. If your PDF is longer than one run, continue from the next page.
Built for listening, not just reading
From study material to proofreading, hearing a document read aloud fits the moments when reading it on screen does not.
Listen to papers and study material
Hear a reading assignment or research paper while you walk, cook or rest your eyes.
Proofread by ear
Hearing a report or contract read back catches clumsy sentences and missed words that eyes skip over.
Reading support
A calm voice at an adjustable speed can make long documents easier for people with dyslexia or low vision.
Turn a PDF into audio for later
Download the reading and play it offline on any device without a PDF viewer.
Frequently asked questions
Is this PDF reader aloud tool free?
+
Yes. No account, no watermark, and no daily limit. The voice runs on your own device, so there is no server cost for us to ration.
Is my PDF uploaded anywhere?
+
No. The text is read out of your PDF in your browser and the voice model runs there too. Your file never leaves your device, which matters for contracts, medical records and unpublished papers.
How much of a PDF does it read in one go?
+
About 6,000 characters per run, which is roughly five pages of normal text. The voice runs on your own device, so a whole book in one click would take hours. When a run finishes, one button continues from the next unread page.
Can it read a scanned PDF?
+
Not directly. A scanned PDF is a set of pictures with no text inside. Run it through OCR PDF first to add a text layer, then read the result aloud.
Which languages and voices does it have?
+
28 voices in American and British English. Text in other languages is not supported yet and will sound wrong.
Why does the first run take longer?
+
The first run downloads a voice model of about 90MB. Your browser keeps it, so later runs start right away.
Can I save the audio as an MP3?
+
The download is a WAV file. After it is generated, use the Continue with suggestions to convert it to MP3 or trim it.
