Frequently asked questions
How does the word counter count words?
+
It counts any run of characters separated by spaces, tabs, or line breaks as one word, so "well-known" is one word and "well known" is two. This matches how Word and Google Docs count.
Does the character counter include spaces?
+
Both numbers are shown. "Characters" includes spaces and line breaks, and "Characters, no spaces" leaves them out. Use the first for limits like X or Instagram captions, and the second for assignments that ask for characters without spaces.
Are emojis and accented letters counted correctly?
+
Yes. Each emoji or accented letter counts as one character, the way you see it on screen, instead of being split into several hidden pieces.
How is reading time worked out?
+
Reading time assumes about 238 words per minute, the average for adults reading silently. Speaking time assumes about 150 words per minute, a normal pace for a speech or voiceover.
How are sentences and paragraphs counted?
+
A sentence ends at a period, question mark, exclamation mark, or ellipsis. A paragraph is a block of text separated from the next by at least one blank line.
Is my text uploaded or saved?
+
No. Counting happens in your browser as you type. Your text is never sent to a server or stored.
