Why use PixelTools to convert png to gif
Single-frame GIF, clearly labelled
You get a still GIF made from your PNG. It will not animate, so there are no surprises when you share it.
Transparency kept
Transparent areas of your PNG stay transparent in the GIF, with edges snapped to on or off as the GIF format requires.
Batch conversion
Drop a whole folder of PNGs and convert them in one go, then download a ZIP.
Private by design
Everything runs in your browser. No upload, no account, no tracking.
Three steps to convert png to gif
- 1
Drop your PNG
Select or drag one or more .png files onto the page. They are read locally in your browser.
- 2
Colors are reduced to a GIF palette
Each image is shrunk to GIF's 256-color palette. Transparent pixels stay transparent, and partly see-through edges are set to either clear or solid.
- 3
Download the GIF
Save each .gif on its own or grab them all as a ZIP. Want movement instead? Make an animated GIF from a video with the video to GIF tool.
When to convert PNG to GIF
People turn a PNG into a GIF when a platform, tool or old workflow asks for .gif specifically. It does not add motion, it just changes the file type.
Forums and message boards that only accept GIF
Some older forums, signature banners and chat tools list GIF as an allowed type but not PNG. Converting lets you upload a logo or badge without hunting for another host.
Email signatures and legacy HTML email
Old email templates and some signature editors were built around GIF for logos. A still GIF with a clear background works there when other formats are rejected.
Flat logos and icons
Simple graphics with a handful of colors survive the 256-color limit with no visible change, so a PNG logo converts cleanly.
Preparing a frame for a GIF editor
Some GIF editors import only .gif files as layers. Converting each PNG first lets you drop them in, then add timing and motion in that editor.
Frequently asked questions
Will my PNG become an animated GIF?
+
No. One PNG is one picture, so the GIF you get has a single frame and does not move. To make an animation from a video clip, use the PixelTools video to GIF tool instead.
Does PNG to GIF keep transparency?
+
Yes, with one limit. GIF only allows a pixel to be fully see-through or fully solid. Soft, semi-transparent edges (like a drop shadow) get snapped to one or the other, so they can look slightly harder than in the PNG.
Will the colors change?
+
Possibly. GIF holds at most 256 colors per image, while PNG can hold millions. Logos, icons and flat graphics usually look identical. Photos and smooth gradients can show banding after the palette is reduced.
Will the GIF be smaller than my PNG?
+
Often not for photos, because the 256-color palette does not make them much smaller and can make them look worse. For simple graphics with few colors, the GIF is usually similar in size or a bit smaller.
Can I convert several PNGs at once?
+
Yes. Drop as many PNG files as you like. Each becomes its own GIF, and you can download them one by one or all together as a ZIP.
Are my files uploaded anywhere?
+
No. The conversion runs in your browser, so your images never leave your device.
