The WebP is decoded to raw pixel data on an HTML canvas. If the file is animated, only the first frame is used, and any alpha transparency is flattened to white for targets like JPG or GIF that don't support it.

JPG and PNG use the browser's native canvas.toBlob() encoder. GIF quantizes the image to a 256-color palette and ICO wraps it in Windows's icon container, both via an in-browser encoder — then the file saves straight to your device.
Who converts WebP files, and to what?
WebP is the default format Google Images, Shopify, and most modern CDNs serve automatically — which is fine until someone downloads one and hits software that's never heard of it.
Anyone opening a WebP in an older copy of Photoshop
Photoshop only got native WebP support in version 23.2 (2022). Studios still running an older perpetual license need the file converted to PNG or JPG before it will open at all.
Windows users emailing a WebP through Outlook
Outlook on Windows doesn't render WebP inline in any current version — recipients see a broken image icon instead of the photo. Converting to JPG fixes the preview without asking the recipient to install anything.

Why can't some of my apps open WebP files?

WebP is newer than JPG and PNG — Google introduced it in 2010 — so older software never got support added. Safari didn't support WebP until macOS Big Sur and iOS 14 in 2020, and Adobe Photoshop only added native support in version 23.2, released in 2022. Anything older than that needs a converted file.
Is WebP lossy or lossless?

Both, depending on how the file was encoded — that's actually one of WebP's advantages over JPG, which is always lossy. This tool decodes whichever variant your source file uses and re-encodes it as whatever target format you pick.
Does converting an animated WebP preserve the animation?

No. Like the rest of PixelTools' image conversion, only a single frame is used as the still image — animated WebPs (WebP's answer to animated GIF) convert to a static JPG, PNG, GIF, or ICO. If you need to keep the motion, this isn't the right tool.
Why convert WebP to PNG instead of JPG?

PNG keeps things lossless and preserves WebP's alpha transparency exactly, while JPG has no transparency support and always applies lossy compression. Pick PNG when the file needs further editing or has a transparent background you want to keep.
Will the converted file be bigger than my WebP?
