Why use PixelTools to convert PNG

Convert to JPG, WebP, GIF, or ICO

Pick your target after dropping the file — one tool covers every common PNG conversion instead of four separate ones.

Reads PNG-8 and PNG-24 alike

Whether your PNG is an indexed 256-color graphic or a full 24-bit image with alpha transparency, the decoder handles both correctly.

Batch conversion

Drop dozens of PNGs at once and convert them all in the same pass. Download individually or grab everything as a ZIP.

No upload, fully private

Every conversion happens locally via the Canvas API. Your PNGs never touch a server.

Three steps to convert PNG

  1. 1

    Drop your PNG file

The browser reads the file locally through the File API as soon as you drop it. Both PNG-8 (indexed) and PNG-24/32 (true color with alpha) variants are supported.

  2. 2

Choose JPG, WebP, GIF, or ICO

The PNG is decoded into raw RGBA pixel data on an HTML canvas. If your target format doesn't support transparency, any transparent or semi-transparent pixels are flattened onto a white background at this stage.

  3. 3

    Convert and download

JPG and WebP use the browser's native canvas.toBlob() encoder. GIF requires quantizing the image to a 256-color palette, and ICO wraps the pixel data in a multi-resolution icon container — both handled by an in-browser encoder, then the file downloads directly to your device.

Who converts PNG files, and to what?

PNG is the default export for screenshots, Figma frames, and anything needing transparency — but that lossless quality comes with a file-size cost that makes conversion necessary the moment the image needs to travel somewhere else.

Designers emailing Figma exports

Figma exports frames as PNG at 2x resolution by default, and a handful of full-screen mockups can blow past Gmail's 25 MB attachment cap. Converting to JPG brings each screen under 500 KB without needing to resize anything.

Store owners speeding up product pages

A Shopify or WooCommerce product cutout saved as PNG for its transparent background often runs 150-400 KB. The same image converted to WebP typically lands at 80-220 KB while keeping the transparency intact.

App developers packaging a Windows icon

Electron and Tauri desktop builds need an .ico file, not a PNG, for the Windows taskbar and executable icon. Converting the app's 1024x1024 PNG master icon to ICO is the step most tutorials skip explaining.

Forum and legacy-CMS users hitting format whitelists

Some older forum software and ad-serving systems from the early 2000s still whitelist only GIF and JPG uploads, rejecting PNG outright. Converting to GIF is the quickest way around that without re-exporting from the original design file.

Photo editors preparing scans for print vendors

A PNG scan or screenshot destined for a print vendor that only accepts JPG — like most consumer photo-printing upload forms — needs converting first, since PNG isn't on their accepted list.

Frequently asked questions

Why was PNG created if JPG already existed?

+

PNG was published in 1996 as a royalty-free replacement for GIF, after Unisys began enforcing its patent on the LZW compression GIF depends on. PNG uses a different, patent-free compression method (DEFLATE — the same algorithm ZIP uses) and adds real transparency, which GIF's format couldn't do well.

Does PNG support animation?

+

The core PNG format doesn't. Animated PNG (APNG) is a separate extension that Firefox added in 2014 and Chrome only added in 2017 — support is inconsistent enough that GIF and video formats remain the practical choice for animation.

Why is the converted file bigger than my PNG?

+

It depends on the target. Converting to JPG or WebP usually shrinks the file, since both use lossy compression. If you're comparing to an already-compressed PNG-8 (indexed color) source, the difference will be smaller than converting from a full 24-bit PNG.

What happens to transparent areas when I convert to JPG or GIF?

+

JPG has no alpha channel at all, so transparent pixels are filled with white. GIF supports transparency, but only as a single on/off value per pixel — any partially transparent edges in your PNG get snapped to fully transparent or fully opaque, which can leave a slight hard edge.

What's the difference between PNG-8 and PNG-24?

+

PNG-8 uses an indexed 256-color palette, similar to GIF. PNG-24 (or PNG-32 with alpha) stores full 24-bit true color plus an 8-bit transparency channel. This converter reads either variant correctly and re-encodes it based on the target format you choose.

Can I make a favicon from a PNG logo?

+

Yes — select ICO as the output and the browser packages your PNG into a Windows-style multi-resolution icon file. PixelTools also has a dedicated PNG to ICO converter if you want more favicon-specific sizing controls.
