What is a NEF file?

NEF is Nikon Electronic Format, the RAW file written by Nikon DSLRs and Z mirrorless cameras. It holds the unprocessed sensor readout, which gives editors room to fix exposure and color but means ordinary photo viewers cannot show it.
Can it handle big files from a D850 or Z7?

Yes. We tested a 47 MB, 45.7 megapixel D850 NEF and it converted to a full 8288 by 5520 pixel JPG, taking between 10 and 40 seconds depending on the computer. Very large files use a lot of memory while they are developed, so convert them a few at a time on phones.
Does it read compressed and lossless NEFs?

Yes. Uncompressed, lossless compressed and the 12-bit and 14-bit variants are all supported. Some newer high-efficiency formats may not be, and you will see a clear error if a file cannot be read.
Why does the JPG look flatter than my Nikon's own JPG?

Nikon's in-camera look comes from Picture Controls, which only Nikon software can apply faithfully. We develop with your camera white balance and a standard tone curve, so the result is neutral and ready for your own edits.
Are my NEF files uploaded?
